DataGlyphics to Develop News University Online Learning Portal
11/25/2003

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – DataGlyphics Inc., a St. Petersburg-based Web development firm, today announced that The Poynter Institute has selected DataGlyphics to develop the technology for News University [www.newsu.org] – an online training portal for professional journalists and journalism students. NewsU, a project of The Poynter Institute, is funded by the Knight Foundation and scheduled for launch in Q1 2004.

NewsU will provide Web-based, interactive lessons in journalism skills and leadership and will cater to journalists who cannot attend in-person seminars at Poynter's facilities in St. Petersburg, Fla. The project grew from two recent developments in journalism training: the growth of Poynter Online's [www.poynter.org] Web audience following the September 11th terror attacks and a study by the Knight Foundation that showed journalists ranked training as their number one need.

"Training opportunities for journalists are more important than ever," said Howard Finberg, project director of NewsU. "While executives recognize this fact, they are also struggling to make effective use of newsroom budgets. At the same time, journalists are struggling to find the time within their own busy schedules. Poynter's e-learning program hopes to meet these needs."

NewsU will also use DataGlyphics' technology to power its interactive learning partnerships with other journalism training organizations and associations.

The new site will feature an intuitive front-end that will allow students to register for classes, sign up for the NewsU e-newsletter and access current news articles. On the secure back-end of the site, the system will allow authorized personnel to manage user accounts, create and send bulk email, manage site content and more – all with no HTML programming required.

William H. Stover, Jr., CEO of DataGlyphics, said, "NewsU is going to help journalists across the country and around the globe gain access to valuable training. Our goal is to make the site user-friendly for journalists – and for the NewsU staff that will manage the site's content and courses."
